Supporting Student Career Exploration:
A Guide for Faculty & Staff
Connect academics with career possibilities by fostering lifelong learning and adaptability so students can
explore options, develop essential skills, and navigate their professional journey with confidence. Here's how to
support career exploration:
Integrate Career Exploration into Conversations &Coursework
• Help students see how their academic major shapes their thinking, problem-solving, and engagement with
the world.
• Highlight how critical thinking, communication, leadership, and adaptability-skills developed in academic
settings-apply to the workplace.
Promote Skill-Building Opportunities- Skillify Your Syllabi (and programs)
• Incorporate the language of the 8 UA Career-Ready Skills in your syllabi and learning objectives and/or
event outcomes.
• Note how assignments and activities build the Career-Ready Skills and contribute to students' long-term
career goals.
Connect Students with Career-Building Experiences
• Examples include: career fairs and networking events, Career Launch curriculum, on-campus work &
research, campus activities and leadership roles, and other high impact practices
Help Students Find Meaning & Develop a Growth Mindset
• Encourage students to reflect on what is meaningful to them and how their academic and co-curricular
experiences shape their aspirations.
• Emphasize that career paths are not linear-flexibility, resilience, and adaptability are key to long-term
success.
• Support students to embrace challenges as learning opportunities, reinforcing a growth mindset and
increasing their resilience.
Guide Students in Telling Their Own Stories
• Help students articulate how their experiences-both in and outside the classroom-contribute to their
personal and professional growth.
• Encourage them to frame their skills, strengths, and values in a way that resonates with potential employers
who may not understand their major curriculum.
